STEREO Weekly Meeting Minutes for 2009-05-05 (Week 19) ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------- * Approval for the change to G&C FSW 3.2.6 on Behind has been received from Goddard management. An updated timeline will be distributed shortly. Most of the timeline hasn't changed as affects the instruments--the changes are mostly additional details for the MOC and DSN. INSTRUMENT and SPACECRAFT STATUS -------------------------------- * All subsystems on both spacecraft are nominal, except that the Ahead spacecraft is currently operating on IMU #2. DISCUSSION AND OPERATIONS CONSTRAINTS ------------------------------------- Week 18 * The planned station 55 support for Ahead on day 119 (Apr 29) did not occur because the receiver was red. This resulted in the loss of 8 or more hours of SSR data for all the instruments. SECCHI reported receiving additional data this morning for Apr 29. * Ranging data was uncalibrated during the station 65 pass on Ahead on day 120 (Apr 30) due to equipment problems at the station. * The third SECCHI 180 degree roll on Ahead was carried out successfully on day 118 (Apr 28). * The redundant soft command loss timer autonomy rules were reconfigured for 24 hours instead of the previous 60 hours in preparation for the reset on May 12. These rules will be reenabled before the reset. * The average daily downlink was 5.2 gigabits on Ahead, and 6.5 gigabits on Behind. Week 19 * An unexpected SECCHI reset on Ahead occured this morning (May 5). Recovery is planned for early tomorrow morning. * A long gap between passes (30 hours) will occur on Ahead between Thursday and Friday (May 7-8). * The third SECCHI/HI 180 degree roll on Behind is scheduled for day 126 (May 6) at 17:50 UT. * G&C FSW version 3.2.6 will be loaded to Copy 2 in EEPROM on Behind on day 127 (May 7) in preparation for the G&C reset. * A workstation configuration rehearsal will take place in the MOC on Thursday (May 7). * An active region coming over the limb as seen from Behind produced a fast CME today, and the first type II radio burst seen since March 2008. There was some discussion about the possible effect on the reset activities on May 12. At that time this active region will be close to central meridian as seen from Behind. Although this region is producing CMEs, it's not expected to be the kind of major region producing large events like the "Halloween storms" of 2003. Also, with the active region at central meridian, any energetic particles reaching the spacecraft would be coming from a CME shock, for which one would have at least a day's warning. Prompt particles would follow the Parker Spiral, and would miss the spacecraft. * CORRECTION FROM DICK MEWALDT: "One of the properties of a CME driven shock is that it spreads out in longitude as well as radius. As a result, an event near central meridian can reach field lines that are connected to Earth rather rapidly (within an hour or 2). Even for eastern events like December 5, 2006 (at E79) the SEPs arrived within ~4 hours. We may get a days warning before the shock arrives, but not before the SEPs arrive." Week 20 * Ahead momentum dump is scheduled for May 12, 13:30 UT start. * The reset on Behind is scheduled for May 12. Instruments will reconfigure for power down during the track starting 18:30. MOC will upload 3 time tagged commands for the reset. The 70 meter track at Goldstone starts at 23:00. IMPACT and PLASTIC will turn off at 23:00, followed by SECCHI at 23:05 and SWAVES at 23:10. As the instruments turn off, they will be switched to survival heaters. Polling will then take place before sending the system reset command, which will send the spacecraft into boot mode, and from there to EA mode. The telemetry rate will be commanded from 11 kbps to 633 kbps. From there, the spacecraft will be brought up into operational mode. SECCHI and SWAVES are expected to start commanding at the end of the track, and IMPACT and PLASTIC on the following track starting at 23:30 the next day. * The first track after the reset will be at 720 kbps. The plan is to have space weather telemetry up and operational by the end of the track. The following track will be at the nominal 480 kpbs. * No data should be lost during the reset. All SSR pointers should be recovered from non-volatile memory. * However, the stored command table will be lost. SWAVES is planning a gap in their use of the stored command table for days 133-136 (May 13-17) inclusive. They expect to submit commands on day 134 for day 137, for example. * The backup 70 meter track will happen regardless of whether the reset occured or not. * SWAVES would like to do a memory load during the backup track. This would take 2 hours, and would use half the uplink in bypass mode. This would need to be coordinated with both IMPACT/SEPT and PLASTIC. Both the IMPACT and SWAVES teams would be at the MOC at this time. SECCHI does not object to this activity, but would like to see a timeline. PLASTIC commanding would take 4 hours for ramping up high voltages, but is waiting for the roundtrip light time for each command. SWAVES commanding can stop and restart, but is not designed for it. Another possible time for the memory load occurs in the following week. * SWAVES also asked about the possibility of doing a memory load during the pass for the momentum dump on Ahead. * IMPACT will perform their initial configuration from Berkeley. This will be followed by SEPT commanding from the MOC. SWAVES will also be commanding from the MOC. SECCHI and PLASTIC will be performing their recovery from their home institutions. Week 21 * The previously modified autonomy rules will be reset to 80 hours sometime during the week, which effectively disables the rule. Other * No date has been set yet for the reset on Ahead. This is expected to occur sometime in August or early September.
